Damascus mosaic is not a carving on wood, but rather an assembly of it. The artisan does not draw the decoration; instead, they gather thin slices of variously colored woods — dark walnut, light lemon, and reddish rosewood — along with pieces of mother-of-pearl and bone, and then bundle them together to be cut crosswise into thin slices, each carrying the complete geometric shape. These slices are what are glued onto the surface of the box one by one until the star or geometric plate you see is complete.
This means that every decoration on this box is made of real wood and real mother-of-pearl, not a printed image or a sticker — which is the difference that distinguishes the original piece from the cheap imitation that is widespread.
The box is a practical size suitable for rings, bracelets, and watches, or for letters and small photos, or for those items that have no specific place in the house but are hard to part with. Its interior lining is soft, protecting what’s inside, and its lid fits securely.
Like everything handmade, no two boxes are exactly alike; the direction of the wood grain and the shine of the mother-of-pearl vary from piece to piece, and this is precisely what makes it your unique piece.
